Serge & Miranda’s Story
Serge has been supporting his wife, Miranda, who has been living with metastatic cancer for over 10 years. Living with cancer at such a young age, and for so long, comes with unique challenges, and meeting those needs can sometimes feel impossible.
For Serge and Miranda, the West Island Cancer Wellness Centre has been a true lifeline. The Centre provides access to a wide variety of programs that make a real difference in their lives, especially after difficult days at the hospital. What they love most is that they can participate together. Serge appreciates that, as a supporter, he has access to the Centre’s incredible programs as well.
Serge recognizes the importance of taking care of himself, but he also knows that not everyone has the means to do so. Being able to access these programs free of charge has been life-changing, giving them both the tools and support they need to care for themselves and each other across a wide range of needs.
Both Serge and Miranda cherish their support groups. Serge attends the Supporters Pee-to-Peer support group, while Miranda is part of the Metastatic Support Group. Together, these programs and communities have truly transformed their experience of living with cancer.
Serge and Miranda feel that the WICWC has been life-changing for them, and with your support this Giving Tuesday, you can help change lives too.
Two years ago, Del was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer. His doctor told him to go home and get his affairs in order. After a series of treatments, the man who had always been known as “rough and tough” was suddenly unrecognizable to himself. Del could no longer walk, he felt like a shell of the person he once was. His outlook on life darkened, and he struggled to understand what there was left to hope for.
His doctor suggested he explore the West Island Cancer Wellness Centre, and Del did, apprehensively, figuring he had nothing to lose. Little did he know, it would be a decision that changed his life. Through programs like chair yoga and tai chi, Del gradually began regaining mobility and confidence. He still remembers starting tai chi seated, relying heavily on a cane, until eventually he no longer needed the chair, or the cane. He truly believes these programs played an important role in helping him become mobile again.
But the changes went far beyond physical progress.
Del found a welcoming community where he felt understood and supported. The friendships, the conversations, and the everyday moments shared with participants, staff, and volunteers helped lighten his perspective and bring a sense of connection back into his life.
Now, Del visits the Centre a few times each week. Every time he leaves, he says he feels better, whether it’s from a class or session, or simply from a meaningful discussion with someone who gets what he’s going through. He talks about the “thousand firsts” he’s experienced here: his first massage, first reflexology session, first cooking class, things he never imagined trying. And every one of these programs is offered completely FREE of charge.
Looking back, Del often reflects on how different his life feels compared to two years ago. The Centre has played a major role in helping him rediscover joy, strength, and a renewed sense of possibility. He says he truly can’t imagine where he’d be today without it.
This Giving Tuesday, your support helps ensure that more people living with cancer, people like Del, can access the programs and community that make such a meaningful difference in their lives.
